Use the local explanation first
Calgary’s published comparison describes community associations as offering voluntary membership and civic or community services. It describes homeowners’ and residents’ associations as collecting title-linked fees for association assets. This is local context; verify the specific organization.
Do not classify by name alone
An organization called a community association may still manage private infrastructure or collect a property-linked assessment. Our directory keeps the source’s organization name and separately records its functional category, membership evidence and outstanding questions.
Keep related organizations visible
A neighbourhood HOA and a voluntary community association can both be useful. The goal is not to rank one above the other. It is to identify which organization handles the question, and whether its membership or fee is separate.
